As part of our participation in TEFAF Maastricht 2026 we are hosting a talk at our stand, 605, given by leading expert, and co-author of the recent catalogue raisonné on Carel de Nerée tot Babberich, Sander Bink.
2pm Saturday 14th March 2026
Stand 605, TEFAF Maastricht
This is alongside our special focus on Carel de Nerée tot Babberich (1880 Zevenaar, Netherlands - 1909 Todtmoos, Germany) at TEFAF this year.
Carel de Nerée tot Babberich (1880 Zevenaar Babberich, Netherlands - 1909 Todtmoos, Germany), was a society figure who lived and worked in diplomatic circles and as a bohemian symbolist artist. His decadence of character and artistic oeuvre speak to his comparison with artists such as Aubrey Beardsley, Jan Toorop and Gustav Klimt.
An artist who never exhibited in his own, short, lifetime and who has been somewhat overlooked for years has recently been brought back to attention. The exhibition ‘Carel de Nerée. Anders dan de anderen (‘Different from the others’)' last year at the Dordrecht Museum, Netherlands and his inclusion in the 2020 ‘Aubrey Beardsley’ exhibition at the Tate Britain, London, allowed De Nerée to be seen by a wider audience for the time. In the 2025 Barry Humphries auction sale at Christie’s, the three De Nerée works achieved ten times, and more, their estimate, sparking further interest in this previously lesser well-known Dutch artist.
From a small oeuvre this will be one of the most substantial displays for sale of De Nerée’s now extremely rare works, having been assembled by Emanuel von Baeyer over the years and now presented for the first time at TEFAF.
