A very fine and rich impression, with small margins all around. From a distinguished provenance.

After several years without making any prints, Claude Vignon returned to the practice of etching around 1635, producing numerous illustrations for novels, poems and the theatre. According to Pacht-Bassani, Vignon’s own etchings such as ours are a reflection of his personal style, even if they are clearly inspired by a variety of other printmakers. Our print in particular has a strong Rembrandtesque association, but, at the same time, the elongated composition and the close attention to the variations of poses of the characters are, according to Pacht-Bassani, characteristics of this particular period in his career 1.
