This catalogue focuses on printmaking in France in the period 1544 to 1844. Our selection ranges from prints of the School of Fontainebleau to the masters of the French Baroque and Rococo print, and to examples of French Neoclassical and Romantic art. As in previous catalogues, many of our examples are in early states and proof impressions, and include numerous printed and drawn counter proofs. Emanuel von Baeyer contributes introductory remarks on the counter proof, illuminating the art-historical significance of this genre of prints.
