Woodland Path represents an important addition to the small authenticated œuvre by the seminal Dutch Golden Age artist, Hercules Segers (c.1589/90 Haarlem – c.1633/40 The Hague). Woodland Path is the only accepted forest view painting by Segers, one of a larger number by him described in old sources; the others have long since been lost. Documented in several early inventories, its recent re-emergence represents a triumph of art historical detective work and fortuitous circumstance. The provenance of Woodland Path is arguably the best of any other Segers painting; what is more, it is the only painting by the artist to have been rediscovered in more than sixty-five years.

This wonderful painting is now on the market and available for sale. It is certainly a rare occasion that the opportunity arises to acquire a work by Hercules Segers, and particularly one of his paintings with such an exceptional and traceable provenance.

Woodland Path featured prominently in the 2017 exhibition Hercules Segers at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and discussed at length in the comprehensive publication, Huigen Leeflang and Pieter Roelofs, eds. Hercules Segers Painter Etcher: Catalogue, Amsterdam, 2017.
