A study of the upper part of the setting for the painting Pierrot and Popolana (Private Collection). According to Wendy Baron, the two figures in the painting "were presumably two lovers in carnival dress, enjoying and embrace" in front of the porch of the church of San Martino in Venice, of which the votive statuette of the Virgin Mary is studied in the present oil (Baron 2006 p. 277).
