Walter Richard Sickert 1860 Munich – 1942 Bath Femme de Lettres, 1911/12 Etching and engraving. Size of plate: 15 x 22.7 cm.

Signed in pen and ink Sickert (state) and below plate destroyed.

Watermark: 'J H' partially visible

Literature: Bromberg 149. V/VII, illustrated p. 168.

One of two recorded impressions. Before the reduction of the plate and and before all lettering.

The title of this print is intentionally paradoxical, as the "Woman of letters" is busy flirting with her lover more than with her reading stand. As suggested by the inscription, Sickert was apparently not satisfied with the image. However, after the reduction of the plate, the print was published by the Carfax Gallery in 1915.
