After the death of his second wife in 1920, Walter Sickert relocated to Dieppe in France. Sylvia Gosse followed him there. Wendela, who was a close friend of Gosse and longtime acquaintance of Sickert’s , remembered that when Sickert “…went to Dieppe , Sylvia was never far behind.”
While visiting Dieppe, Gosse, as well as Sickert, painted
scenes of casinos and café life, markets and streets. Our etching is based on Gosse’s
painting “Dieppe”, now at the Gallery Oldham (Oldham, inv 12.33).
