Franz Xaver Pitner 1826 Vienna – 1892 Gries (Bolzano) Portrait of the artist Hercules Brabazon Brabazon (1821-1906) Pen and ink over pencil heightened in white. Size of sheet: 22.2 x 18 cm.

Dated 3.9.1851 and inscribed Venizia.


Both artist met in Venice, in 1855-56, where Brabazon (1821 Paris – 1906 Sedlescombe) stayed with John Singer Sargent in Venice and he is mainly known for vivid watercolour townscapes of Venice.

On Pitner’s return to Vienna in 1857, he showed the portraits done on his travel at the Wiener Kunstverein and it is possible that our work was included.
