Walter Richard Sickert 1860 Munich – 1942 Bath Portrait of Max Beerbohm (1872 – 1956) Size of sheet: 26.3 x 20.9 cm. Studio marks, dots of white and red paint on the recto. Inscribed in pencil n.6 verso.

Provenance:    Collection of Mark Birley (1930 – 2007)

A drawing of the English essayist, caricaturist and parodist Max Beerbohm (1872 London – 1956 Rapallo) who signed under the name ‘Max’ and become known in the 1890s as a dandy. He was a known friend of Walter Sickert and his sister, Alice Mary, often sat as a model for the artist.

Dr Wendy Baron believes the portrait to be by Sickert, noting that it was clearly drawn from life and that among the reasons identifying it as such is the “abbreviated handling of the hands... typical of his work throughout his career”[1]
