Director's Synopsis:
Back Into Darkness
A Short Film About Painting
Running time: 26.15
A rare insight into one of Britain's acclaimed contemporary figurative painters, Nicholas C Williams. Shot primarily at his cavernous studio, a former lifeboat station on the north coast of Cornwall, the film documents his approach to painting – working directly from the model and drawing on symbolism and the careful use of light to examine aspects of human behaviour.
Over a period of seven years, director and cinematographer Lee Evans reveals Williams’ painting process – the collaboration with models, the making of props and the layered thinking behind each work. A studio visit and interview by fellow painter Marcelle Hanselaar provide an enquiry into the otherwise, until now, undocumented painter's life.
The documentary is enriched by music from two of America’s most important composers, the celebrated composer and conductor, John Adams and composer of electronic music and experimental media Richard Karpen.
