Kehl, Max

Born in 1991 in Munich, Germany, Maximilian Theodor Kehl’s work delves into the delicate balance of minimalistic realism, where every line and mark speaks volumes. A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts Munich, Maximilian studied under the guidance of Professor Olaf Metzel, honing his craft of capturing the essence of the human form through traditional drawing and printmaking.

At the heart of his practice is a deep fascination with the directness of drawing, where a few subtle lines can evoke the most complex human expressions. His portraits are not just representations—they are an exploration of essence, capturing the spirit and personality of his subjects through delicate nuances of expression. His work invites the viewer to look deeper, offering an emotional connection through the simplicity of the medium.

Kehl’s work is not just about likeness—it’s about creating an illusion of reality with minimal materials. His drawings, often based on photographs or short video clips, embody a sense of vitality and energy, emphasizing the raw power of the medium itself. The result is a refined expression that enchants both the familiar and unfamiliar viewer, akin to the timeless allure of the “Mona Lisa smile.”

Having exhibited in prominent galleries and collaborated with the Erl Opera Festival, Kehl’s work continues to captivate audiences around the world.
