Engraving after Francesco Primaticcio (1504 Bologna – 1570 Paris).
Size of sheet: 49.2 Å~ 39.5 cm.
LITERATURE
R.-D.34 (as Rene Boyvin); Zerner 5 (as Pierre Milan).
PROVENANCE
Late 17th-century numbering and inscription in brown ink: “Il famoso convitto dei dei soffr[..]tto Palazzo del Te giorgio mantua[...]”. Traces of a blue ink stamp, not identifiable. Very strong impression with small margins and thread margins around the platemark. After a design for an unidentified ceiling by Primaticcio; Zerner rejects the attribution to Boyvin supported by Robert-Dumesnil and, establishing a parallel with a “square ceiling” mentioned by Van Mander as a work executed by Pierre de la Cuffle, proposes to attribute the plate to
Milan, provided that Pierre Milan and Pierre de la Cuffle are one and the same person.
