Master Prints from 1600-1900

This catalogue is devoted to master prints of different schools from 1600-1900. As ever, it features several proof impressions, early states and hitherto undescribed examples. Highlights include a rare complete series of the Seven Liberal Arts by Lucas Kilian; a counterproof of an etching of a rustic wedding dance after Pieter Brueghel the Elder by Wenceslas Hollar; a very popular and highly elaborate mezzotint representation of the Life Class at the Vienna Academy by Johann Jacobe (1790) and many others. The catalogue also offers a group of artists’ portraits and self-portraits, including a self-portrait by Jean-Etienne Liotard and a selection of works by German printmakers active in Berlin around 1800. It also features the famous lithograph of the Brothers Eberhard by Johann Anton Ramboux. Our catalogue entry provides the first complete listing of all the known examples, with a detailed description of the print’s different states. Our selection is rounded off by a number of artists’ autographs giving insight into aspects of printmaking and the contemporary print trade.
