Venus and Vulcan seated on a bed, c. 1540-55

Giorgio Ghisi
1520 - Mantua -1582

Etching and engraving after Perino del Vaga (Florence 1501 – Rome 1547). Size of sheet: 28.3 x 20. 5 cm. Watermark: P. Pricard with shield, (Lewis watermarks 43); Briquet 9613 (Namur 1547 plus variants in Antwerp, Bruges etc.).

Boorsch/Lewis 18 (Ia/III).

Extraordinary impression in deep black and precisely printed from the very first state before the crack below the right foot of the standing putto (Lewis Ia) and the watermark of P. Pricard with shield as wished for that state. Trimmed on the platemark. A tear left and a small old replacement area below and between the foot of Venus. The design is traditionally attributed to Perino del Vaga, although the source remains unknown.
